See Black Chicago the way my father showed it to me: by car, one story at a time. A driving tour of the Obama Presidential Center, Bronzeville, Chicago’s jazz and blues history, the DuSable Museum, and Pullman, made for older travelers, families, and reunion groups.

My family has been in Chicago since before the Great Migration. My great-great-grandmother married in Chicago in 1896. My great-grandmother Eva Mae danced with the famous Shuffle Along company. Her brother, Robert “Bobby” Anderson, played second base for the Chicago Giants and founded the Olde Tymers Athletic Club in 1932.
My father drove me all over Chicago to teach me its history. On Michigan Avenue he showed me where Al Capone’s hotel stood, across from Chess Records, and told me how my grandfather’s brother played alto saxophone in Capone’s band.
I’m Janice Temple: a former flight attendant, a family-history researcher, and a Level 9 Google Local Guide since 2015. My Google Maps photos have been viewed more than 176 million times. This guide is how I would show my own family around.
